As we are approaching winter, it is essential that you take care of your eyes from the harmful Ultraviolet (UV) rays and the cold air.

As the temperatures drop, the air is more drier and less humid causing your eyes to lose moisture, this results in dry eyes and irritation caused by the insufficient production of tear drops.

Use these tips for Winter Eye Care:

1.  Use Moisturising Eye drops

Cold winter air causes the eyes to dry out more due to causing evaporation of the water from your eyes.  Use moisturising eye drops to keep your eyes hydrated.

2.  Keep a Humidifier

Keeping the heating on in the winter reduces moisture in the room which leads to the symptoms of dry eyes.  Try reducing your distance from heaters and radiators.  Use a humidifier to regulate air flow in the room, this will aid in providing more moisture in the room.

3.  Wear Sunglasses

We all protect our eyes in the summer from the intensity of the sun and UV rays by wearing sunglasses.  Harmful UV rays are reflected off snow and ice surfaces on the ground.  Always wear your sunglasses in the winter months to protect your eyes from the rays of the sun.

4.  Rest your eyes

We are more likely to stay indoors staring at our digital devices during winter months, if this is the case don’t forget to give your eyes a break.  Taking regular breaks will reduce eye strain and headaches.

5.  Healthy Diet

As dry eyes is prevalent in winter, it is essential to replenish water loss by drinking more water.  Do not forget to eat a healthy diet of nutrients consisting of leafy greens and fish oils.
